Judges
The awards are being judged by five experts in the areas of design, publishing and production:
Philip Lewis
Designer
LewisHallam
Philip Lewis was a founder of the LewisHallam partnership in 1999. The company specialises in the design of art books and exhibition catalogues. Among his clients are The National Gallery, Tate Publishing, Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Council. He gained a degree in Fine Art at Canterbury College of Art and while working at Zwemmer Fine Art Booksellers and studied book design and production at the London College of Printing. He spent twelve years at HarperCollinsPublishers where he progressed to Design Manager for the Trade Division and subsequently moved to a role as Design & Production Manager at Reaktion Books before starting his own enterprise.
Alan Craig
Production Director
Grove Atlantic Books
Tony Chard
Managing Director
MPG Books
Since his appointment in 2001 as Managing Director of MPG Books, Tony has spearheaded a £15m investment programme and a complete transformation of the Company enabling the replacement of every item of plant within the factory and the building of a new purpose built warehouse. At the same time, he has developed new strategies within MPG Books to strengthen the core business including colour and lamination, e-business, short run solution, fulfilment and stock management. His vision has subsequently revolutionised the production process from both the publishers and manufacturers perspective thus ensuring MPG's position as a market leader in the future of global book production.
As the only UK book manufacturer to achieve the three environmental accreditations - ISO 14001, PEFC and FSC, Tony is mindful of the Company's carbon footprint and social responsibility: similarly he recognises the reward of investing in the training and empowerment of the 140+ employees.
In 2007, Tony, along with Sales Director Andy Simpson, will lead an MBO of MPG Books and thus enter another exciting chapter for the Company which also sees the move to a one-site operation and on-going investment with a second binding line, two large format presses and folding machines and two VLF CTP systems.
Peter Saxton,
Biography and Art Buyer
Waterstones
Peter joined Waterstone's in 1999 after a long career in the railway industry. After a spell in a branch he moved to head office and worked in the Bibliographic department before being appointed to the new position of Independent Publisher Coordinator. This involved liasing with smaller publishers that didn't have a current relationship with Waterstones and help them through the process of getting their books into shops. He then became Non-Fiction Buyer, looking after the front of store promotions across non-fiction, then finally took the Biography and Art Buyer position under Waterstone's category management process. So he now looks after books in these genres throughout their lives, from front of store through to core stock.
