British Book Design and Production Awards, 8 November 2021, De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms, London
The BPIF is honoured to announce the winners of the 2021 British Book Design and Production Awards, held on 8 November at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in Central London.
The evening was hosted by guest presenter Penny Smith. She is well known for her passion for reading and is a television and radio presenter, a newsreader and a journalist, seen regularly on BBC news. Penny moved on to Sky before becoming a presenter on GMTV. Her early mornings lasted for over 30 years! She kept guests well entertained throughout the evening, presenting a total of 19 awards.
The judges, whose combined skills covered the print, design, retail and publishing sectors, were inundated with over 500 beautifully produced entries, making their task extremely difficult before producing the prestigious list of finalists.
Once again, the most popular category was the Best Jacket/Cover Design category, which continued to attract the highest number of entrants, with a record 96 submissions. It was won by Thames & Hudson for their title Vivienne Westwood Catwalk, which was praised by the judges for its ‘fabulous cover design’.
Seb Lansdowne, a student from the University of the West of England, came top in the Best Student Book category, winning a £500 cheque and the opportunity to complete an internship in the industry for his book Monstrous Carbuncle.
Boss Print were the outright winners of the evening, finishing at the top of four categories including Photographic Books for their book Capri; the Self –Published and the Best British Book category with their book i.Detroit, as well as winning the coveted Book of the Year title for the same book. The judges agreed that i.Detroit was in a ‘class of its own’, stating that the ‘striking photography, and the beautiful combination of design, creative and print production made this book stand out in every aspect’.
Each guest took home a stunning Book of the Night, designed by EN-TE and printed by Halstan, with Diamond Print Services, which showcased the shortlisted and winning books - a collection of all the talent of all this year’s finalists.
The glittering event was a night to remember, and was a wonderful celebration of the talent, technology and dedication of those who produce the country’s finest books.
The BPIF would like to thank the sponsors and supporters of the 2021 BBD&PAs: BookMachine, Canon, Halstan, Intelligent Finishing Systems, Imago Group, Mondi, Muller Martini, Oxford Brookes University, The Bookseller, The Printing Charity, Troubador Publishing and Winter & Company.
